Handbook

   Arrivals:

The buses will drop students off at the rear of the school. They will enter the lower lot in front of the rectory.  If you are dropping off a child, please drive around the front of the school first and then pull up to the stop sign at the rear of the school and allow child to cross in front of your car to enter Cavanaugh Hall. The school day begins at 8:20.

   Dismissals:

Do not make Doctor or Dentist appointments any earlier in the day than you can make picking up your child in car line. Early dismissals are not permitted unless there is an emergency. It is a distraction to the others in the classroom. No cars may enter the playground areas at lunch time.

The back of the school is reserved for buses. All children who are to go in car line are picked up in the front lot near West Chester Pike. The children will be walked out of the building and to your car. This is for the children's safety. No children may be taken out of bus lines.

it is extremely important that proper behavior takes place while riding the school bus to and from school. Studetns are asked to:

1. Remain seated while the bus is in motion.

2. Talk quietly with those seated near you.

3. Refrain from screaming or shouting, causing distraction to the driver.

4. Refrain from eating, drinking, or chewing gum while on the bus.

If cooperation is extended by each student bus rider, then the safety of all is strengthened. Any child receiving a bus conduct report for uncooperative behavior will serve a detention the following scheduled Tuesday. the receipt of three Bus Conduct Reports will result in the student being deprived of bus transportation for a week.

According to West Chester Area School District Transportation department, children are not allowed to switch buses as they are so full.

Please inform your child before he/she leaves for school and send a note to the teacher, if they are to be picked up in car line. There shouldn't be any confusion for the child as to how they are getting home that day.

Field Trips of educational value are privileges afforded to students; no student has an absolute right to a field trip. The students may, as a group or individually, be denied participation if they fail to meet academic or behavioral requirements. No child will be permitted to accompany the class on a field trip unless the written permission form has been signed. No other form of writing or phone call will suffice.

After school detentions are held every other Tuesday from 3:10 to 4:10 PM. Notice is given to parents at least 24 hours in advance of detention. Transportation after detention is parental responsibility. Please be on time picking up children.

In case of severe weather, the official announcement for school closings may be heard over the local radio station WCOJ (1420 AM) by school name or television stations Fox TV or Channel 6.

The West Chester Area School District determines school closings and late openings. We follow their directives. If a one hour delay is announced, our starting time is 9:20. If a two hour delay is announced, our starting time is 10:20.

If it begins to snow heavily or becomes icy during the school day when the children are in school already, please listen to the stations mentioned above for announcements concerning early dismissals. It is mandatory that each family devise what plan is to be followed on such a day. Please be sure your child knows what to do and where to go before they arrive at school that day. The use of school phones on such a day is prohibited.

Report Cards are issued in December, March, and June for Grades 1-8.  In grades 4-8, 70 is a passing grade. Letter grades O, VG, G, S, I, and U are used in the primary grades for core content areas.

Each child will bring home a communication envelope every Thursday. All general communications from school should be emptied, signed, and returned to school no later than Tuesday for use the following week.

To contact a teacher, a parent should write a note to the teacher requesting a conference or a telephone call. Parents may also call the office and leave a message for the teacher. Teachers are not permitted to leave their classrooms to see parents or answer phone calls. Parents should not call teachers at home.

If questions or difficulties arise, parents first contact the teacher of the student. Open and honest communication between parent and teacher usually clarifies or solves most situations. If the situation warrants it, the principal meets with the parent and teacher for the required conference.

At no time may a parent or parent volunteer go to a classroom during the school day or at dismissal to discuss any problems or concerns about an individual child.

In bad weather when boots are necessary, shoes must be carried to and worn in school by everyone. Please label all articles with proper identification so that lost clothing can be claimed.

Gym Uniforms

The uniform consists of solid navy blue shorts with the school name and the navy blue shirt with the school name. The shirt and shorts can be purchased from B&E Sportswear. Sneakers that tie must be worn. Ankle/sneaker socks are not permitted. During the cold weather months (Nov. 2 thru Easter) navy blue sweats with the school name must be worn to and from school as they are part of the uniform. The children wear the sweats all day, unless temperature of the room demands otherwise. Students not prepared for class will receive an unsatisfactory grade for that day. The school nurse is available to handle situations which occur during the school day only. The school nurse is responsible for all school medical records. She administers eye screening tests, ear screening tests, scoliosis tests, and first aid.

As a safety precaution, teachers would appreciate a notification from home if there is a temporary or chronic need for a child to be excused to go to the lavatory for any reason. Also, if your child is under a doctor's care and prescription medicine is necessary, the student's parents must provide the school with the medicine in the druggists' container; the name on the container must be the child's and the parent must submit a Doctor's note for the school to administer this particular medicine to the child. This medication must be given to the school appointed person, usually the school nurse.

A student who becomes ill in school will be sent to the Nurse's Office after obtaining permission from the classroom teacher. It is essential that each child have an updated emergency card on file with the work number of the parents/guardians and the telephone number of a person who has agreed to assume responsibility for your child in the event you can not be reached. if a child is absent due to illness, he/she should be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.

There are many opportunities for parents to become involved in school activities. Parents may assist as homeroom mothers, nurses aides, office or copy room aides and/or help by typing, phone calling, etc. Throughout the year, parents sign up to help with special lunches and other projects. There are "sign-up" papers at the Home and School Meeting in the beginning of the year. Also, a parent volunteer paper goes home in the fall with each child. You are a most welcome part of our School Family and we greatly appreciate all your help.

The Lost and Found is located next to the main office. If an article is found, it should be placed in this room. Please check there for lost articles. names should be on articles of clothing or anything belonging to a student.

Supplies may be replenished here at school if you so desire. The money must be in an envelope marked with the child's name and room number and exactly what is needed. Please put the envelope in the child's Friday folder or send it the the classroom teacher any day. The person in charge of stationary will fill the order on a daily basis. Initial stationary supplies are purchased the first few days of the school year.
